The Last Days of Summer

The summer has just flown by. My daughter will be seven months old at the end of this month, and we're already making preparations for my son's third birthday. Where does the time go?
I saw a signature file once that said: "The years fly by. It's the days that drag." I think this is true with any challenging experience that last longer than a few minutes. Certainly I've said more than once "will this day NEVER end?", and yet here I am, wondering where the time went already. My daughter has 2 teeth and is desperately trying to crawl; my son is learning to speak new words every day and surprises me regularly with his intelligence and insight.
And yet, the daily grind is unbelieveably grinding. It's extremely difficult working from home with a toddler and an infant, tougher than I would have imagined. Most of the challenges I had pegged, but the intensity of the challenge is incredible. It's probably the hardest thing in the world, to leave your child who is screaming for you to just stay and play with him, so you can sign in to a conference call that will be as exciting as a tax audit.
As three approaches, the daily nap begins to disappear. This is extremely challenging, since naptime is productive work time. Whatever work that can't be done during the day, has to be done at night, after the kids are in bed. While I'm still adjusting, I'm spending every night working, catching up while I teach my son that he cannot spend every waking moment with mommy. I'm hoping that very soon, I'll be in bed by Midnight. But until then, I can only hang on by my fingernails and hope I don't fall before my son learns that mommy needs time to work.
And of course, as we can see from this blog, I could use a little more discipline. Instead of working, I decided to blog before I finished my work. I suppose I'll get a good night's sleep when the kids are in college, right?
